- At the risk of me sounding uninformed (which I am in terms of Windows),
- isn't the TCP/IP stack the Tattams Winsock v1.0b6?
-
- Oh, and in case it comes to mind...I don't use Mosaic over a SL/ip
- link, so mosaic isn't running at all while I'm using SL/ip.

- I believe resource LEEK's only happen for users in Wales (or, maybe, those
- using Crynwr packet drivers :-).

-
- This is not strictly true. My internet provider (Demon Internet Services
- in the UK) provide SMTP for dial-up sites (they do offer POP as a less
- useful alternative). They have around 3000 customers (last time I asked,
- but they also have exponential growth).
-
- Now for the gory details ...
-
- Demon customers get their own Internet site name and IP address (most end
- in .demon.co.uk, like mine). Demon set MX records for all these site to
- one of their Unix boxes, so all incoming mail goes to a permanently
- connected site. They have modified their SMTP setup so that SMTP "knows"
- when a Demon customer dials in using SLIP or PPP, and starts delivery
- processes for all mail to that site. Dial-up users have SMTP at their end
- (DOS users mostly use KA9Q, for example) to collect incoming mail, and to
- deliver outgoing mail - either direct or via Demon.
-
- This is very effective, and means Demon customers may have many users
- (or, at least, user names) at their site. They may set up new users, and
- decide whether to bounce mail etc. at their own discretion.
-
- Alternatively, you can ask Demon to provide you with POP mailboxes. The
- limitation here is that you must tell Demon about every user at your site,
- and ask again every time you want to change anything.
-
- So, although your statement may be true for some (most ?) service
- providers, it is certainly not true for all of them.

-
- There ARE good off-line news and mail readers available, for both DOS and
- Windows (although the Windows offering I know about is an early alpha).
-
- My Internet provider her in the UK is Demon Internet Services. They charge
- 10.00 GBP (about - $15.00) [plus local tax] per month for unlimited SLIP or
- PPP access to the Internet.
-
- Most Demon DOS users use a variant of KA9Q to connect. This variant
- collects all mail for the site via SMTP, and collects all the news for
- (user-)selected newsgroups via NNTP. Various off-line programs are
- available to read and reply - SNEWS and PCElm is the "standard"
- configuration, but there is also something called Umail. Best of the
- bunch is a really wonderful program combined off-line mail and news
- program called CPPNEWS (but then I would say that - I wrote it :-).
-
- For Windows, there is a Visual Basic (yuch :-) program called DICS (still
- in alpha) which works over Winsock, and does the SMTP/NNTP bit, and NewsWin
- (or is it WinNews ?) to do the off-line reading and replying (also in
- alpha test).
-
- There is also an extensive collection of documents, mostly well worth
- reading by everyone from beginners to gurus.
-
- The whole lot is available for public ftp from ftp.demon.co.uk (best times
- to ftp - probably during our working day - say 10:00 to 16:00 GMT - they
- have a lot of home users who log on during cheap phone rate in the
- evenings). A good place to start is pub/doc/dis-meta.faq.
